Three simple reasons the martial arts are excellent for mental well being

The martial arts, specifically karate, are well-known for improving people’s mental well being and developing good character. But how exactly is this achieved, and what are the links between martial arts practice and a better inner world? Here are three super simple reasons why the martial arts are a fantastic go-to activity for improving your mental well being.

1. Physical exercise.

We all know that exercise is important for the body and mind, and as a form of physical exercise, the martial arts provide a wealth of benefits.

Through regular martial arts practise, you’ll start shedding fat, sleeping better, and flood your body with feel-good chemicals which rejuvenate your body and improve your mood.

Where karate and kickboxing stand apart is the variety of different class plans and focus (which keeps it interesting), as well as being led by a team of conscientious coaches who will encourage and motivate you to reach your health well being goals.

2. Meeting like-minded people.

(Introvert disclaimer: Sorry to say, but…) Humans are social animals, and our brains and bodies are wired to respond positively to being around others.

In a good dojo (training hall), you’ll find yourself in an environment that promotes individual excellence, as well as allowing you to work with other people who are on the same path, and share a common interest – you already have an ice breaker (pun about karate guys breaking blocks of ice not intended).

Further, you’ll be encouraged to be yourself around others who are also being themselves. An accepting environment promoting self-expression helps to foster bonds between even the most unlikely people.

The dojo is a place where barriers are broken, and everyone helps to build each other up.

3. Stress relief.

Nothing beats arriving at a martial arts session after a long day at work, and getting to channel all your stress and exhaustion into kicking and punching stuff.

Impact exercises such as punching a pad are known to reduce stress and can even improve symptoms of anxiety. We’ve all felt the tension build up in our bodies after a long day or stressful events, and hitting stuff (in a safe way) provides just the physical release we need!

Besides, it’s infinitely better than punching Dave from Accounts because he’s not been replying to your urgent emails… Save it for the pads.

When you consider the feel-good chemicals from exercise in general, being in a positive social environment, and being able to strike the your stress away, it’s no wonder people leave class smiling and sweating, feeling miles better.
