The power of our student creed

We believe that the journey of learning karate goes far beyond mastering physical techniques. While kicks, blocks, strikes and grappling are integral to our training, we place immense importance on cultivating strong character, discipline, and a positive mindset in our students, especially our younger warriors. This is why our Student Creed is a cornerstone of our dojo philosophy.

You’ll hear it recited with focus and intention at the start of our classes:

English version:

I will always try my best and never give up.

I will always be respectful and polite.

I will always do the right thing and make good choices.

I promise to only use my karate for good, and to protect myself and others.

Welsh version:

Mi nai pob tro drio fy ngorau a byth rhoi mewn.

Mi nai pob tro fod yn barchus a chrtais.

Mi nai pob tro gwneud penderfyniadau da a gwneud yr hyn sy’n iawn.

Dwi’n gaddo mond defnyddio Karate er lles, ac i amddiffyn fy hyn ac eraill.

But why do we have this creed? What purpose does it serve, and what are the benefits for our students?

Why we recite our creed: Building a foundation for life

Our Student Creed isn’t just a collection of nice-sounding words; it’s a verbal commitment, a daily reminder of the values we strive to embody both on and off the mats. Here’s why we believe it’s so important:

Reinforcing Core Values: The creed encapsulates the fundamental tenets of martial arts – perseverance, respect, integrity, and responsible action. By regularly stating these principles, children internalise them, making them a part of their developing moral compass.

  • I will always try my best and never give up.”: This instills perseverance and a growth mindset, teaching children the importance of effort and resilience in the face of challenges.
  • I will always be respectful and polite.“: This emphasises courtesy and respect – cornerstones of martial arts tradition – fostering positive interactions with instructors, peers, and everyone they meet.
  • I will always do the right thing and make good choices.“: This directly addresses integrity and personal responsibility, encouraging students to think critically about their actions and their impact.
  • I promise to only use my karate for good, and to protect myself and others.“: This is so important for teaching the responsible use of martial arts skills. It highlights that karate is for self-defence and helping others, not for aggression or bullying.

Developing Character: Beyond the physical abilities karate provides, we aim to shape well-rounded individuals. The creed acts as a guide for character development. It encourages children to think about the kind of person they want to be and to make choices that align with those positive traits. It’s about building a “Warrior Spirit” that is strong, principled, and compassionate.

Setting Clear Expectations and Intentions: For our young students, the creed provides a clear and understandable framework for expected behaviour. It helps them set positive intentions for their training and for their conduct outside the dojo. Phrases like “I will” and “I promise” are powerful declarations that help children take ownership of their commitments.

Fostering a Positive and Unified Community: When students recite the creed together, it creates a shared understanding and a sense of belonging. It reinforces that everyone in our Warrior Spirit family is working towards common goals and upholding the same values, creating an environment of mutual support and respect.

The lasting benefits of our student creed

The impact of consistently engaging with our Student Creed extends far beyond the dojo walls.

Increased Self-Discipline: The commitment to “always try my best” and “make good choices” helps cultivate self-discipline, a skill vital for success in all areas of life, from schoolwork to household chores. I wonder how many parents of students remind their little ones of their promises at home? We know a few do!

Enhanced Respect and Empathy: By focusing on being “respectful and polite” and using karate “to protect myself and others,” children develop a greater sense of empathy and consideration for those around them.

Improved Decision-Making Skills: The pledge to “always do the right thing” encourages children to pause and reflect before acting, leading to more thoughtful and responsible choices.

Greater Confidence: Living up to the principles of the creed, such as persevering through difficult techniques or choosing to be respectful even when challenged, builds a child’s self-esteem and confidence in their ability to make a positive impact.

A Moral Compass for Life: Ultimately, our Student Creed provides a simple yet profound set of guiding principles that children can carry with them throughout their lives, helping them navigate complex situations and strive to be the best version of themselves. Although, it’s not just children who would benefit from a good moral compass in life, we should all aim to follow a set of guiding principles in the same vein.

We are proud of our Student Creed, it is an integral part of our commitment to empowering our students. It’s a promise they make to themselves, their instructors, and their community – a promise to grow not only as martial artists but as individuals of integrity and strength. Hopefully, by instilling these values early, we are helping to build a generation of confident, respectful, and responsible leaders.
